So many Twitter users find it very difficult to come up with contents on Twitter which has made some tweeps ordinary spectators rather than participants. Oh, pardon me they engage with other people's posts, they are always in the comment section.
Now many individuals on Twitter, occasionally ask questions like
- 1. I have no idea what to tweet.
- 2. How I can develop nice tweets for my audience?
So many other questions pop up every single day regarding what kind of tweet should be tweeted, therefore I came up with a system so that people no longer question what they're supposed to post.
Listed below are the four (4) types of tweets to guide your posts on Twitter:
- · WL - WEBSITE LINK
- · QQ – QUICK QUESTION
- · IB – INDUSTRY BUZZ
- · NE – NETWORK EFFORT
Believe it or not, only one of these four tweets types should be about YOU because that's the number one mistake people make with social media, people use it to talk about themselves, when really, it's about others.
1. 1. WL stands for WEBSITE LINK
However, social media isn’t a tool for BROADCAST, it’s a tool for CONVERSATION, so only one in every four tweets get to be about you, and it's called WL - (WEBSITE LINK).
I choose not to call this type of tweet SP - (SELF-PROMOTION), rather I choose WL – (WEBSITE LINK).
Ideally this type of tweet requires you to attach a link to whatever it is you're sharing, be it a blog post, latest upload on your website, etc.
The link’s purpose is to take your tweeps somewhere they can engage with you for longer.
SELF PROMOTION on the other hand means that tweeps will read whatever you have posted, engage with it for about five (5) to ten (10) seconds, and then move on to something else, whereas if it's a link (WL), it'll link you to a blog post, or link you to something, you've created.
It's not always possible to have a link, but strive for that, because then tweeps can engage with you or your brand for three minutes instead of ten (10) seconds.
Remember, one in every four tweet types, anything that's about you get to be WL, “WEBSITE LINK” but if you don’t have an external link about yourself another trick is the “THREAD”.
2. QQ stands for QUICK QUESTION
This is solely meant for engagement. I use this framework myself, and for all my clients I switch up quick questions to be on BRAND and Non-BRAND.
I - Here's a quick question that would be on BRAND for me.
a. What's your favorite social media platform?"
No that's too nice, let's do one sassier.
b. "What social media platform drives you nuts?"
It's quick and easy and most people have an opinion.
II – Here's a quick question that would be on Non-BRAND for me.
a. Coffee of tea?
b. Chicken or Turkey?
c. How much do you have in your bank account?
Most of the time, answers derived from the QUICK QUESTIONS doesn’t matter, but the point is that you get to engage tweeps with a question and even the audience on other social media platforms because information travels faster these days.
Another important thing to note is that not every tweet should be about your brand, you shouldn’t be a brand robot, let your tweeps know you are human too.
Sometimes talk about things that are not related to work, career, interests, aspirations… etc. and sometimes you just want to have a conversation to keep it real, and that's exactly that’s what you can do with QUICK QUESTION.
3. IB stands for INDUSTRY BUZZ
Industry buzz is the opportunity that you have to reinforce the fact that you're an expert in whatever you tell tweeps your brand is.
a. Remind us that you know what's up.
b. Remind us that you are in the know.
Share with audience statistics, facts, quick tips, anything that is simple, actionable and also reinforces that you know information related to whatever it is you're doing.
Funny as it may seem, asides Jokes or maybe Comedy, this tweet type tends to be the one that gets the most retweets (Viral).
Retweets are important because that's how you essentially get yourself in front of other people's audience and that's really a key element to growth on social media.
Kindly note, it doesn't mean that every single retweet will get you a ton of new followers, but it could, and in general, it's just helping you build brand awareness.
When someone reads your tweet and goes, "Hmmm, I couldn't have said it better myself " you earn a retweet from such a person and every person that feels the same way.
That's how it works, that's the psychology behind that. Hence, INDUSTRY BUZZ tends to be the easiest and most common one to retweet, and so it's good to mix those into your content schedule.
4. NE stands for NETWORKING EFFORT
NE is the most important tweet type because it's the whole reason you should be on Twitter, except you are there for something I can’t explain. Your being on Twitter should be majorly to meet new people and to start conversations.
You have the power to reach out to someone you don't know and give them a compliment. Start a conversation, don't read from your business card because that’s what most of us do.
When I say don’t read from your business card I mean don’t be extremely formal, it is a social media platform not an interview or a business meeting.
Think about it happening in real life, if you went up to you at a party and you said, "Hi, I'm Damilola, I'm a Brand Strategist, and I can help you with this, this, and that. Your audience would be like “Whoop, nope, tuning out” your conversation bores them already from the beginning.
Now Imagine I come up to you, give you a compliment, you will be like "I don't know you, but thanks”. And that ignites that rapport.
Also, endeavor to put some thought into your NE (NETWORKING EFFORT) tweets, and I can tell you this because some of my jobs involve helping people like you build brands, but then part of my job also involves helping public figures, top organization and celebrities manage their social media account. And I am often in the power to make the decision about what gets retweeted, what gets acknowledged, replied favorited, or more often, ignored.
And so, I can tell you from the other side of things that if you put thought into a NE tweet, and you make it easy for that influencer or celebrity to retweet it, they're not always guaranteed to, but they might.
For example, if that celebrity has a book that you read, rather than saying "Hey @akinalabi, loved your book." That's not great. You could say "Hey @akinalabi, loved your book and your perspective on entrepreneurship, I feel very inspired." Something like that might trigger a retweet, so learn to be different.
Puts more thought into it, something specific that shows you've done your homework, is much more likely, exponentially more likely, to be retweeted. So those are the tweet types.
Hopefully, you use these strategies moving forward to get active, remain relevant, and to stay consistent on Twitter, where you can literally meet some of the most important and interesting people.
Bonus Tip:
How often should you tweet, by the way?
That's a hard question to answer. Sometimes people tweet four times a day, sometimes they tweet 40 times a day. It's really what is sustainable for you, that's the answer, but I tend to think that every single person can tweet at least four times a day.
And instead of sending 40 in one day, and then zero the next three days it's better to come up with a system and, if I were you, I'd stay on top of these a week in advance create contents days ahead or better still schedule your tweets you can use platforms like Buffer or Hoot Suite. Also, learn to engage with people real-time.
